TED-X Dubai
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx, basically it’s a localized TED with business leaders, forward thinkers and good speakers invited to present themselves on TED-X Dubai. There seem to be a lot of people in Dubai that think that this is going to put them on Ted.com – it isn’t, but it is a great local forum for sharing of your information and new and exciting ideas.
From a media perspective TEDx is a program of local, self-organized
events. I am sure that there are hundreds of PR companies clambering
for space for their CEO clients many of which will end up disappointed
(I would hope)
However for local entrepreneurs it’s certainly a step in the right
direction to getting some exposure for your ideas. Apparently the
event has been swamped with over 250 people that want to speak at the
event; – I hope it’s not going to fall foul of the normal Dubai
political theatre that so often besets these events where certain
people get the gig based on their status and not the value of their
ideas.
Certainly the announcement of Leo Laporte as the first official speaker
for TEDx seems that the organizers are being true to the spirit of the
event. It is going to be interesting to attend the event and see
exactly how this compares to the real TED. Certainly I wouldn’t like
to be in the shoes of the organizers who are certainly going to have to
let a lot of people down, and face criticism for doing either an
amazing job or a poor one, the most important thing is that the event
happens and certainly credit to Giorgio Ungania and James Piecowye for
stepping up to the plate, good luck with the event guys.
