The IIR New Media Event will take
place on the 18th and 19th of October in Abu Dhabi in
2009, I am really looking forward to the event, not just because I have the honor
of being this year’s chairmen but also because I am going to meet some really
cool people that are speaking at the event.
One of the speakers is Andrew Bleeker The
New Media Director, President Obama Inaugural Committee and Director of Internet
Advertising, Obama For America, USA
There is no
one with more experience in new media than Andrew Bleeker who most recently served as
the New Media Director for the Presidential Inaugural Committee. During the
2008 general election when it comes to politics and social media,
Andrew was
the Director of Internet Advertising for Obama for America where he oversaw the
largest political online marketing operation in history. In this capacity, he
was responsible for all aspects of online marketing for the campaign and the Democratic
National Committee, including unprecedented programs for list building, donor acquisition,
voter registration, early voting, messaging, and GOTV. Andrew also managed Search
Engine optimization for the campaign.
I am really
interested to understand exactly how he feels about social media and its impact
on liberalization of the media landscape, obviously social media is a tool used
by governments everywhere but I am quite interested to see what the position of
is regarding legislation for a unified community profile, NSA use of social
media tools and networks and how he personally feels about the role of social
media to “spin” political sentiment. The
Obama campaign certainly caught my eye, particularly when groups that were
objecting to some of the policy shifts were not removed, certainly very savvy
to engage in dialogue with these groups rather than try and bump their opinions
off the network. Many less experienced
Social Media practitioners may have just been tempted to un-publish the group -
which of course would have been one of
the worse things to do. Anyway certainly
one of the many people I am looking forward to meeting at the New Media event
in October.
